This is the simplest and most difficult question to answer.

In a bad case, your hips are SUPER stiff and weak and your lifestyle habits create more problems. It may take you a long time to identify your biggest challenges AND wake up long-dormant muscle function. It may take you two months (OR MORE) to feel like you've made sustained progress.

However, many people notice drastic improvement much sooner than that. Sometimes a few days or weeks wakes up enough muscle function to make a huge difference in your pain and comfort levels.

The closest analogy is in the garden. If you plant a seed and provide it with all the nutrients and factors it needs to grow, it will grow.

But you cannot force the seed to grow faster by just dumping more water and more fertilizer on it. And it doesn't help you or the plant to get so frustrated that you give up. The seed has a certain pace that will occur on its own, as long as you are treating it right.

Just because you have a scary sounding diagnosis does not mean you cannot improve things drastically! We have had many, many people with cam and/or pincer impingement as well as labral tears and similarly awful sounding issues use this program with success.

In fact, Shane is a perfect example of someone with a hip that is in bad shape from the conventional medical perspective. He has cam impingement, paralabral cysts, and a labral tear. He’s totally fine and more mobile than 99% of men on Earth. While all these medical diagnoses are often blamed as the cause for pain, these issues are commonly found in people with no pain.

A lot of recent research indicates that these diagnoses have little to no relationship with pain or movement problems. For that reason (and many others), we encourage people to focus on dealing with the muscles and with restoring good movement patterns to reduce pain and discomfort.

While surgeons claim surgery will prevent arthritis, there is actually no evidence for this.

In long term studies, FAI bone shapes do not appear to have any correlation to pain or the development of arthritis! Early researchers who first claimed FAI bone shapes as possible causes of hip pain still have not produced any evidence to prove the claim. In fact, several studies have clearly shown FAI has no link at all to the development of arthritis.

We regularly see users of this program drastically improve their hip mobility with exercise, despite having the FAI diagnosis.

Surgery can affect your joint motion in ways we can’t possibly know or predict, so you’ll just need to be mindful as you try different exercises. Just make sure you never push through sharp pain, and if an exercise makes things obviously worse, move on to a different exercise or approach!

We've both health with massive hip mobility challenges and have worked through them over many long months and years. We look at hip mobility challenges as problems that can be solved gradually and with the right approach.

Physical therapy is often protocol-driven, and the protocols we've seen are all far too heavily influenced by orthopedic surgeon's theories.

The unfortunate reality is that many PT protocols have been drafted with input from orthopedic surgeons, which means they will not encourage appropriate levels of stretching, massage, and strength work.

That leads to poor outcomes, frustration, and eventual surgery.

The implication is that charging money for the program makes us callous and money-driven. There are two things to think about here.

First, doctors, surgeons, physical therapists, nurses, yoga teachers, priests, artists, and bike mechanics all charge money for the work they do. Even if they love their work, at some point they need money coming in to keep doing what they love. Phone bills, rent, mortgages, internet service, gasoline, and clothing all cost money. The total charge for hip surgery can easily be 100 times the cost of this program. That does not make the surgeon, the nursing staff, or the anesthesiologist (necessarily) greedy and callous.

Second, while we’d love to give the entire program away for free, the reality is that does not seem to work well. We have actually tested to see what happens when we give people the program for free. So far, anybody who has ever been given the program didn’t bother doing the program. For anyone who’s run a service business, this is probably not surprising. If we gave this program away for free, we know that nobody would do it AND there would be no money to keep the site running.

The skills this program will give you can be applied to other areas where you might have pain. However, this program is intended to address hip and related lower back issues primarily.

There are many ways the program is different, but here are three primary ones:

First, we don't expect massage will fix every problem for everyone. If massage doesn't work, it may be a strength problem. Read this article for more on this topic.

Second, the specific instructions we give you for how to position your body when you’re rolling can make it a completely different exercise. For example, if you roll with both your quads on the roller at the same time, for some people, it’s simply not enough stimulus. For other people, it’s very intense. When we give you just a few little coaching cues about how to shift your body to the side, wrap one foot behind your other foot, it magnifies the effect greatly.

The third way this differs is the timeframe we recommend for each exercise. Our recommendations are often longer than most people have done on their own before. And our recommendations are most certainly longer than what a typical physical therapist would suggest.

The coaching cues we give you for stretching are different from what you’ve heard elsewhere. It’s not enough to utilize a stretch you saw somewhere or tried on your own; it really helps to have knowledgable instruction when you’re performing a stretch to ensure your body is in the right position, so you don’t create a new problem while you are trying to fix the one you already have.

In addition, this program is more than stretching alone.

We have three foundational pillars: tissue work (self-massage), stretching and re-activation. When you combine all three of these things in a knowledgeable way, the effect far surpasses simply foam rolling or just stretching or just doing reactivation exercises. The magic happens when you put them all together.

That depends. If your exercise or workout program makes things worse, you should consider backing off your exercise or modify the exercises that irritate your hips or back. Focus your time and attention on retraining your hips so you aren’t hobbled with pain first – then worry about your normal exercise regimen.

It’s also a good idea to do some of the stretching and tissue work after your workout to help your body recovery and prevent things from going wrong again.

We have worked with some hypermobile people. When you are “hypermobile,” it’s important to focus on the muscles that control the bones. The only part of your body that you can control that gives your body stability is your muscles.
